Business Strategy
Strategy describes how a business will
compete on a market and grow profitably.

A business strategy describes the actions an organization will take to reach its vision and set objectives, as well as how decisions will be made to improve the company's bottom line in a competitive market. We mainly work with Mintzberg's Strategy theories.

The Plan Strategy
Managing comes naturally to us, and many managers enjoy planning. So we tend to brainstorm options and plan how to deliver them when we present them to clients.

A plan is an important element of strategy formulation, and this is fine.

However, planning is not sufficient in itself. More is needed - read on.

The Ploy Strategy
In a strategy, getting the better of competitors means conspiring to disrupt, dissuade, discourage, or otherwise influence them. As well as being a plan, strategy can also be a ploy.

An example would be a grocery chain threatening to expand in order to discourage its competitors from moving in. Or, a telecommunications company buying up patents they could potentially use to launch a competing product.

The Pattern Strategy

Plots are deliberate exercises just as are strategic plans. Depending on the nature of the organization, strategy may also emerge from the past. Consistent, successful ways of doing business can be viewed as strategies as opposed to intentional choices.

Imagine a manager who makes decisions to enhance a customer support process that is already highly effective. Even though he doesn't intentionally create an advantage, his actions nonetheless lead to one.

The Position Strategy

Another way to define strategy is "positioning," or how you decide to present yourself in the market. Strategy helps you explore how your organization and environment are aligned, and this is key to establishing a competitive advantage that is sustainable.

In this scenario, you might develop a niche product to avoid competition, or you might try to distinguish yourself from a multitude of competitors.

The Perspective Strategy

Organizations make their strategy decisions largely based on their culture. Just as patterns of behavior shape an organization's perspective, patterns of thinking will determine its abilities.

A company that promotes risk-taking and innovation among its employees might emphasize innovation as the main thrust of its strategy. Alternatively, a company which emphasizes reliable data handling may opt to outsource these services to other businesses.
